Fractured Fairy Tales

Fractured Fairy Tales

We spent two months reading and writing our own fractured fairy tales. First, we read the original fairy tale versions. Then, we read fractured versions which were funny. We learned the parts of a fairy tale like it has to have a good and bad character, start with "Once Upon a time", have a problem and some magic. It ends with... They Lived Happily Ever After. Here are some pictures of the cover pages of our fairy tales all bound and ready for reading! We had so much fun reading them to our classmates and kindergarteners.

This week we got ready for Pentecost on Sunday. We created doves to look like the Holy Spirit. We used a paper plate and wrote about the birthday of the church. We liked making the doves and adding the string to hang them up.

Nearpod app in action

Nearpod App for Math

This week for math rotations we used the Nearpod app. We were able to solve problems in division, multiplication, subtraction, addition, time and money by drawing our solutions. We then get to hit a button and share the way we solved problems with our class. It appears on the ipads of our friends! It is so much fun to see the different ways people solved the problems.

Division Flip Books

Division Flip Books

While we were doing division centers we created division flip books. We cut out four division word problems and then on the back we made the math problem to match and also drew a picture to show how we solved the problem. It took a lot of time but it was fun. -2LC foodies

We have been watching our silkworms in class. First, they were just little worms. Then, they made their cocoons and we waited for them to hatch. It was fun to have them in our classroom and see science come alive. -2LC foodies

We go to ask questions and ask what the words meant in Chinese. Bubblegum's grandma came in and we made book marks with pandas, dogs and birds and cats. We learned that they read up and down. They used to make books out of sticks. They read from the right to the left. - Noodles and Donut

We learned remainders with Skittles. We had to sort the Skittles by color and put them in different groups and found out what the remainder was. We sorted them by fives and sevens. The best part was eating them!- Donut and Noodles

Jesus is Present at Communion

Jesus is Present at Communion

We learned about the Eucharist and how when the host is consecrated it becomes the body of Jesus. We made our own chalices and decorated them with glitter paints and gems. Then we cut out the host and when it flips up a picture of Jesus is visible. It was a lot of fun to learn about Eucharist and also create our own chalice. -2LC Foodies

We were lucky to have a friend of the class come in and give a presentation of the civil war! We learned so much about Jefferson Davis, why the north was fighting the south and how hard life was like for the cavalry. We even learned what the people ate while fighting and how their days were spent. -2LC foodies

We had a wonderful time spending time with our VIG's! We created water colored hearts with sharpie which have hidden words in them. The words are things which we share in our hearts together. We also had treats and shared laughs together! It was a great afternoon!

Fractured Fairy Tales

Fractured Fairy Tales Unit

I like the Three Little Pigs the best because they are so clever. I also like The Three Little Pigs because they are so cute! -Cookies and Cream

We read a lot of fairy tales but my favorite is The Three Little Pigs. I thought the pigs were cute. -Lemonhead

The fractured fairytales are very funny. I think they are the best. -Gummi  Bear

My favorite fractured fairy tale was Cindy is So Annoying. It was so funny because Cindy was so annoying. -Wild & Reckless Ice Cream

My favorite fairy tale was the regular Princess and the Pea by Dubravka Kolanovic. It was  good because the scenes in the book were incredible. - Brownie

In The True Story of Three Little Pigs the wolf is good and the pig is bad. In Cinderella Skeleton it is the same story of Cinderella but with a skeleton. - Gumball

The fairytale books are awesome books. I liked the Gingerbread Man the best. - Caprese Salad

I liked the Princess and the Pizza because of the competition and it was funny. I like The Three Little Pigs because it is cool.-Lemon Chocolate Chip

We read many stories. My favorite was The Gingerbread Man. - Fudge

My favorite fairytale was The Princess and the Pea because it was funny and it was funny because in the fractured version the queen wanted the prince to take a wife. -Pizza

I liked The Princess and the Pizza because I like pizza and they had a contest. - Gum

I love reading fractured fairy-tales. My favorite one was Cinderella. I liked the fractured fairytale Cinderella is so Annoying. I liked it because Cinderella never stopped talking and on the day she got a chance to talk more she lost her voice. -Donut

My favorite fractured fairytale was The Princess and the Pizza. I liked it because she makes a business of making and selling pizza. -Bubblegum

I liked to read The Three Little Pigs because in the fractured fairytale the wolf goes to jail. He wanted some sugar for his granny's cake. -Jawbreaker

The best fairytale we have read was The Three Little Pigs. I like it because I like the pigs and the pig beat the wolf. -Bacon

I went all in my head to know what fractured meant and I know what a fairytale is so when my teacher told me I was surprised fractured meant fake and I know what fairy-tales are so I combined them and I was amazed. - Hot Dog

My favorite fractured fairy tale was The Three Little Pigs. I like it because the pigs were funny. -Noodles

I like The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. The best part about it is when the wolf goes to jail. - Lazagne

I liked The Princess and the Pea, the version is The Princess and the Pizza. It is by Mary Jane and Herm Auch. - Jolly Rancher

We have read a lot of fractured fairy-tales. My two favorite are The Princess and the Pizza and The Gingerbread Girl. - Marshmallow

The past weeks we have been working on a fairytale book. My favorite is The Three Little Pigs the most! - Risotto

Today we learned about how to find fractions and how to create our own fractions. We then made gumball machines and had to write what the fraction of each gumball color was in our machine. It was fun to get to choose the gumballs and to figure out the math.

Art Vista: Renoir

Art Vista

We learned about the artist Renoir in Art Vista this week. Then, we were able to choose a scenic picture and recreate a part of the picture using paints. They turned out amazing and the class worked so hard on it! Here are a few examples of our masterpieces.

First, we used the grid paper and created rooms for our dream house and labeled the rooms. Then, we had to find the area of the rooms by counting the number of squares in each room. Some people made many levels in their dream houses and some did one level. There were bedrooms, game rooms, indoor swimming pool rooms and more! -2LC foodies

We learned  in math how to find the area of an object. Then, we created our own monsters and found the area of the different body parts of the monster. It was fun to be creative and create an art project and do math at the same time. -2LC foodies

We learned about Passover and celebrated a Seder meal as a whole second grade class. We learned what each of the food meant  and were able to experience new foods.

City Hall Field Trip

Field Trip to City Hall

We went on a trip to City Hall. I liked what the mayor looked like. - Lemon Chocolate Chip

The City Hall is really cool! My favorite place in the building is the 18th floor. I also liked opening the meeting. It was so fun! - Lemonhead

When we went to City Hall we sw lots of things. We were also at the meeting and it was really fun. We saw the 18th story and we ate in the rotunda. We had a blast! -Risotto

I like how we got to eat in the Rotunda. -Lazagne

At the City Hall I went to the 18th story and I saw a pretty view. I also saw a car with flames. -Cookies and Cream

I liked two things about City Hall. I liked the falcons on top of the tower and the rotunda. -Hot Dog

We eat in a  building that  was made out of glass at City Hall. - Pepperoni Pizza

When we went to City Hall we wwnt to a room, then we heard a man sing the National Anthem. Next, we looked at the man's office and finally we entered a meeting that was on TV! -Marshmallow

I like to see everything when I was on the 18th floor. -Noodles

I liked the view from the 18th floor!-Fudge

I loved the view, especially of the bird! -Gummi Bear

I had a fun time at City Hall. I got to see the mayor!  -Gumball

At City Hall they have Peregrine Falcons! - Gum 

At City Hall there are birds that are on top of the tower!-Wild and Reckless Ice Cream

I can't believe the mayor knew who we were! When we got to be on the 18th floor we could see everything! I thought I would fall down. -Bubblegum

I saw the rotunda and it looked like R2D2. - Chocolate Ice Cream

I really liked seeing Pete Constant. I also enjoyed lunch in the rotunda. -Pasta

It was very fun and it was scary on the 18th story! I liked the rotunda best of all. -Caprese Salad

It was so awesome that we got to eat in the rotunda. I even got to see the mayor. -Jawbreaker

My favorite thing was when we were on top pf the building and it has a beautiful view. They told us that some birds live on the building. - Grape

I go tto see the mayor at a City Hall meeting. -Pizza

I learned that at City Hall they have two birds. -Donut

When we were at City Hall we got to be announced to say the Pledge of Allegiance. -Bacon

I saw and went into the tower that is really tall. - Jolly Rancher

There was a huge window and it was awesome. I saw the airport and saw a plane take off. It was awesome! -Brownie

At City Hall we saw the mayor and the councilman and he said, We have very special guests. The HS second graders and they will join us in saying the Pledge of Allegiance. " He said, " Thank you for coming second graders. " - Smarties

Flat Stanley Goes to New York and New Mexico!

Flat Stanley's Travels

Our First two Flat Stanley's arrived back to our school! First, he had an incredible adventure as he visited relatives of Donut's in New York. He was able to go to Times Square, a real TV studio and was even on tv! He had such a great time! Then, he was sent to New Mexico to visit a relative of BubbleGum's and went on Route 66, learned about peppers and also visited the New Mexico Museum of Natural History! We think he liked learning and eating chili peppers the best!

We were able to make some stained glass windows that we will hang in our windows once the season of Lent ends. They will be cheerful and bring joy to the spring.

Spring is.....

Spring is.....

We wrote poems about the spring and had to use our adjectives and the five senses when writing. Then we painted a brown branch and used the bottom of a coke bottle to paint the blossoms.

We are learning about our heritage and how our ancestors came through Ellis Island. We read the ebook "Ellis Island: An Interactive History Adventure" book where we learned how people came to America and got to choose our own adventure. Then, we dressed as people from our country of heritage in the year 1894 and created cartoon strips with speech bubbles saying what we might be thinking back then. We used the apps Comic Book and Halftone. 

I am a girl from Portugal and I wore a scarf over my head and  scarf around my neck. If I could bring only one thing from Portugal I would bring my dog, Beau. -Cookies and Cream

I am a girl from Poland and I wore dresses and a braided front to it. I would pack my dog if I had to leave to come to America. -Lemonhead

Chinese Painting

Chinese Painting

We learned how to paint with special brushes and paints from China. At the end we were able to make one large painting together. I made a panda when I painted. -Lemon Chocolate Chip

On Saturday we have our special first communion retreat. We will make our banners, practice receiving and also make these beautiful wine glasses which show the date of our communion as a special memory. -2LC foodies

It was fun to paper tear but it was hard to rip it all out because you had to have a very steady hands. -Grape

Today for a heritage report we learned about Italy and we were able to paint like Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel by painting on our backs. Some of the kids in our class got paint into their mouths!  It was hard! -Bacon

Heritage Projects Begin!

Heritage Projects Begin!

This week the kids in 2LC take the teaching into their own hands and teach the class about their countries of heritage! So far we have had cooking shows to teach us about the foods of Argentina, a picture walk through the country of England and also a lesson on how to make origami from Japan! They are having so much fun running the class, calling on classmates, and answering questions!
